OPHTHALMOLOGY

OPHTHALMOLOGY DEPARTMENT HEAD
Doctor Vincent Pierre-Khan

What is ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is a medical and surgical speciality which studies, diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the eye and its surrounding tissue. Specialists in the field are called ophthalmologists.

What pathologies does the department cover?

The Hôpital Foch ophthalmology department is at the cutting edge for the treatment of conditions affecting the back of the eye, most particularly the surgical treatment of cataracts.

The ophthalmology department also provides care associated with retinal conditions, eye inflammations, neuro-ophthalmology and glaucoma.

Outpatient treatment of eye conditions

Hôpital Foch is well established for outpatient eye surgery with over a thousand interventions completed per year. In most cases the patient is treated in less than a day and does not have to stay the night at the hospital.
A certain number of different eye correction techniques are proposed for presbyopia, astigmatism, hyperopia or cataract associated myopia.

Surgery is performed by specialists who are experts in their field. Their sole preoccupation is to ensure the condition of the patient throughout the procedure.

Retinal conditions: organised or emergency treatment

the ophthalmology department treats retinal conditions of both surgical and medical*origin. Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is the most commonly occurring retinal condition amongst patients aged over 50, and retinal problems related to diabetes are more common under the age of 50. Certain retinal conditions require urgent treatment. Particularly in cases of retinal detachment.

Other conditions (epiretinal membrane, macular hole) require programmed treatment to restore a macular anatomy and improve vision.

*age related macular degeneration, severe myopia, diabetic retinopathies, retinal vascular occlusion
